Checklist for a Move

Here’s a checklist to help you move:

Organize and declutter:

  • Sort through your belongings and decide what to keep, donate, sell, or discard.
Start this process well in advance to avoid last-minute stress.
    Create a moving budget:
  • Determine your moving expenses, including moving company fees, packing supplies, transportation costs, and any additional services you may need.

    Notify relevant parties:

  • Inform your landlord about your move and provide the required notice period.
Notify your utility providers (electricity, gas, water, internet, etc.) and schedule disconnection or transfer of services to your new address.

    Change your address:

  • Update your address with the post office to ensure your mail is forwarded to your new residence.
  • Inform important parties of your address change, such as your bank, employer, insurance providers, and any subscriptions you receive.

Arrange for movers or rental equipment:

  • Decide whether you’ll hire professional movers or rent a moving truck.
Obtain quotes from moving companies and compare prices if you’re hiring professionals.
  • If you’re renting a truck, book it in advance to secure availability. (U-Haul has movers available on the website and sometimes you can get a month free for storage)

    Gather packing supplies:

  • Purchase or collect packing materials like boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and markers.
Consider utilizing eco-friendly options or borrowing supplies from friends and family.

    Start packing:
  • Begin packing non-essential items early on, leaving essentials for the final days.
  • Clearly label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to.

    Take inventory:

  • Create a detailed inventory of your belongings, noting any valuable or fragile items. This will be useful for insurance purposes and to ensure everything arrives at your new apartment safely.

Arrange for furniture and utilities at the new place:

  • Measure your new apartment to determine if your existing furniture will fit.
If necessary, sell or donate furniture that won’t be suitable for the new space.
  • Schedule utility connections for your new home, ensuring electricity, gas, water, and internet services are set up before your arrival.

Pack an essentials box:

  • Pack a separate box with essential items you’ll need immediately upon arrival.
Include toiletries, bedding, kitchen utensils, a change of clothes, and any necessary medications.

Clean and repair the current apartment:

  • Clean the apartment thoroughly, including floors, walls, appliances, and fixtures.
  • Repair any damages to ensure you receive your security deposit back. (My apartment has an option to pay for the cleaners and I usually go this route it saves me soo much peace of mind.)

Coordinate moving day logistics:

  • Confirm the details with your chosen moving company or rental truck provider.
  • Arrange for parking permits if required for loading/unloading.

    Take care of personal tasks:

  • Inform friends and family about your move and provide them with your new address.
  • Transfer or close local memberships, subscriptions, and services that are no longer needed.
    Move-out inspection:
  • Schedule a move-out inspection with your landlord to document the condition of the apartment.
  • Take photos or videos as evidence of the apartment’s condition when you leave.
Finalize the move:
  • Pack up the remaining items, disassemble furniture if necessary, and load the moving truck.
  • Double-check that all windows and doors are locked before leaving.

Remember to personalize this checklist based on your specific needs and timeline. Good luck with your move!
